What is a demo?
A demo is a short audio recording sample of your music playing, singing, rapping or voice over abilities. Demos are rough recordings of songs or announcer air checks and often do not include a whole lot of material. 

Why do I need a demo?
You need a song, rap, music or announcer demo to promote yourself and show your talent. An audio demo is sent out by bands, rappers or announcers to record labels and radio stations to land a deal or a radio gig but can also be used for personal use.

Song or music demos         
Record labels expect your demo to be rough there is no need to worry about the recording quality of your demo. Also remember that a demo should be short and It should contain your best songs; three or four is ideal. Your demo should only offer a taste of your music.
 
As a musician or song artist, your demo is your calling card. It is your ticket to getting noticed by record labels, so it's very important to get it right the first time. If your songs are great, listeners will hear them, no matter how much cash you spent on your recording.

On air announcer demos         
Radio station PD's expect your demo to match their station's music format. Do not send a mexican regional demo to a pop station or vise versa. The PD is also going to expect to hear a recent on air demo of you and not a 5 or 10 years old demo.

Your announcer demo must contain a few on air breaks and some listener interaction i.e. calls or prize giveaways. It must also contain some production samples like station promos and or radio spots you’ve voiced and or produced.

Most importantly, be sure to keep your demo between 2 and 3 minutes in length or 3-5 minutes if absolutely necessary but preferably short sweet and to the point. This will improve your chances of the PD actually contacting you to hear more of your work.
